this past week I used the Trepanning insert to turn the grooves into the face of each end plate. Because the CNC mill sucks caca poo poo, the groove was an N-gon, not a circle. I slightly expanded the groove in the rear end plate to clean up the chopped ah groove. I also re-faced the end cap to take it down to its final dimension. After this, the reference surface for the groove depth, so I deepened the groove to be back in spec.

On the front end cap, I used the big 1.5 inch endmill to rough away the excess material. I found that the big boy end mill didn’t like shallow depths of cut, neither did it like cuts with 20% engagement, so I did big, deep full slotting operations to clear out the material.

Adam did a silly billy move and only cut the exact depth of the OD of the endcap. This meant that there was a big rim on the outside of end cap, preventing me from seating it fully in the 4-Jaw chuck. So I switched to the 3-Jaw chuck to hold the cap. I faced it down, and trepanned the grooves.

I was really sus about the mounting in the chuck and I didn’t trust that the part seated flush against the jaws, So I made a 6-Axis dial indicator holder. I used the mounting interface from the steady rest and 80-20 bars, some of which I milled through channels in to allow adjustability. On the end of the final 80-20 extrusion I tapped a 1/4-20 hole for an adjustable camera gimble that we had purchased for JONAs camera system. I then made a part to interface with the dial indicator and the camera gimble to attach them together.

Eventually I finished the end cap, however sadly because of a small error in my machining, it is 1 thousandth of an inch too thin. I think it will be fine though.

I also worked a little bit on my No-5 Stanley Bailey pattern hand plane. I lapped the sole.
