This week we met with two marine engineering experts: Tim Raymond and Jeff. They Both gave a ton of advise. Tim helped with making sure that my buoyancy math was done right. Of course it wasn’t. My methodology was good, however I used the design origin as the center rather than the center of mass. I needed to move the center of mass and buoyancy to that origin.
Tim also told us that there is not a ton of vibration underwater, however the distorted thread locknuts I choose were a great choice.
Tim then explained nitrogen purging and why it is done. He explained that we will only really need to do it when going down to depth. Although the vacuum step of the purge is helpful to test the seal. He said that we should pull a significant vacuum and leave it overnight. If the vacuum drops significantly, it is leaky.
Jeff gave insight into industry standard companies and products that we couldn’t find. He told us about Falmat Cable, which is a much better option for tethers than what I had been looking at.
He also told us about Kellums grips, a much better strain relief for the tether. Also talked a ton about sensor fusion, sensor products and electrical systems and fail-safes.
He warned us about trying to make 6000m depth Syntactic foam, because the glass beads can be very deadly. He seemed unconcerned about the 2 part mix that we found, however I need to text him to make sure.
